Although in some aspects, Gakonga’s paintings are traditional, he has developed his own cotemporary style. Gakonga strives to stimulate the viewer with color, vibrancy, movement, life and humor, all of which represents his experience of growing up in Kenya. As a result, Gakonga’s works creates a total sensory experience for the viewers.
Each of Gakonga’s paintings has its own story to tell, relating to the various activities in African culture. Each vibrant color is well thought-out to reflect the meanings associated with colors in Africa. In fact, African art follow certain traditional standards that relate to beauty, harmony between masses, power of expression, stature, balance, rhythm, and movement.
While Gakonga paints with inspiration in his spirit, he hopes that his art will bring joy, life and appreciation of African life, art and culture.
